WORD: Enemies, Frenemies, and Friends: David’s Relationships in the Autumn of Life

Steve Houston • 2 Samuel 15-20

David’s “wild ride” in today’s passage foreshadows the rejected and returning Perfect David and intensifies our longing for him.

  1. RELATIONSHIP CHAOS WHILE AT THE PALACE (15:1-17:14)
    • Absalom Plots and David Panics (15:1-16:14)
      • Absalom wins hearts, declared king in Hebron, and enters Jerusalem.
        • Absalom the Usurper: subversive and ruthless (15:4,6)
      • David flees with Ittai, weeps on the Mt. of Olives. Shimei curses David.
        • Ittai the Companion: “game” plus devoted (15:21)
    • Ahithophel Counsels and Hushai Counter-counsels (16:15-17:14)
      • Ahithophel gets Absalom to commit incest.
        • Ahithophel the Betrayer: brilliant but treacherous (16:21)
      • Hushai gets Absalom to not immediately pursue David.
        • Hushai the Counselor: sympathetic plus persuasive (15:32; 17:10)
    • People tend to mirror how we treat them – for better or for worse. (Gal 6:7)
    • God often rewards or disciplines us thru’ their responses. (2 Sam. 12:10-14)
  2. RELATIONSHIP EXTREMES WHILE ON THE ROAD (17:15–19:43)
    • Military Victory and Personal Defeat (17:15-19:8a)
      • Ahimaaz alerts David to peril. David’s men win and Joab kills his son.
        • Joab the Maverick: heroic but insubordinate (18:14)
      • David hears his son died, grieves over the top, and Joab scolds him.
    • Currying Favor and Scorecard Updates (19:8b-43) ++ 20:1-26
      • Israel’s men and Judah’s men rush to be the welcoming committee.
      • Shimei is forgiven, Mephibosheth exonerated, and Barzillai honored.
        • Shimei the Opportunist: abusive and self-preserving (16:5,7; 19:19)
        • Mephibosheth the Trooper: grateful plus selfless (19:30)
        • Barzillai the Giver: generous plus unassuming (19:36)
    • Relationships suffer from the bad choices others make. (Eccle 9:18)
    • Friendships last when we leave room for human frailty. (1 Peter 4:8)

King-Friend Jesus leaves room for our frailties and remedies our faults.

Pray

Lord, bless all fathers and godly men with Your wisdom, patience, and love. Guide them to be a source of strength and support for their families and those they can influence for your kingdom. May their hearts be filled with joy, their days with peace, and their lives with Your divine favor. Amen.
