PRAY: Persecuted Believers in Nigeria

In a letter signed Oct. 15 by 33 leaders of Christian organizations, including Focus on the Family and the Colson Center, is an appeal to President Trump to declare Nigeria a “country of particular concern (CPC).” Christians in Nigeria are paying for their faith like no one else in the world. According to a Newsweek report, over 7,000 Christians have been killed in Nigeria during the first 220 days of 2025, an average of 35 killings a day. The letter closes with this…

“We support the recommendation for Nigeria’s CPC designation by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom and in bills recently introduced in Congress. Even talk show host Bill Maher, who is not a Christian, was emphatic that there needs to be a meaningful American response to the “systematic killing of Christians in Nigeria.” We believe that, after nearly five years of simply “watching” the arrest of individuals on harsh blasphemy charges and the relentless massacre and persecution of defenseless Christians solely for their faith, assigning only Special Watch List status would be a weak and legally inadequate response. Such a move would dishonor religious freedom as a core pillar of U.S. foreign policy and further reinforce the previous administration’s downgrade and sidelining of the targeted killing of Christians.”

In his speech before the UN General Assembly on Sep. 23, President Trump said to world leaders, “Let us protect religious liberty, including for the most persecuted religion on the planet today—it’s called Christianity.” Pray for strength and protection for persecuted Nigerian believers.
