WORD: Elisha the Devoted, Elisha the Dedicated

Steve Houston • 2 Kings 1-6

Elisha was a devoted follower of Elijah, then a dedicated servant to many. Jesus is the Ultimate One we follow. And he is the Ultimate One we offer.

  1. Elisha the Up-and-Coming Go-Getter (1 Kings 19-22; 2 Kings 1–2:14)
    1. Elisha’s Call: Elisha was caught up in Elijah’s whirlwind of ministry.
      1. Elisha chose to follow Elijah’s calling. (1 Kings 19:16,19-21)
      2. Elisha learned to follow Elijah’s ways. (1 Kings 20-22, 2 Kings 1)
    2. Elisha’s Commissioning: Elijah was caught up by a whirlwind of fire.
      1. Elisha went the distance with Elijah to the very end. (2:1-12a)
      2. Elisha picked up where Elijah left off at the end. (2:12b-14)
    3. Draw deeply from the well! Elisha got all he could get from Elijah.
    4. When God gives you an opportunity to learn, squeeze it for all it’s worth!
  2. Elisha the Out-and-About Go-Giver (2 Kings 2:19-6:23)
    1. Elisha’s Compassion: Elisha had a tender heart.
      1. He provided for people’s needs. (2:19-22; 4:1-7; 4:38-44)
      2. He restored what people had lost. (4:18-37; 5:9-19; 6:1-6)
    2. Elisha’s Confrontation: Elisha had a strong backbone.
      1. He put the high and mighty in their place. (3:13-14; 5:9-11)
      2. He made ordinary folks answer for their behavior. (2:23-25; 5:20-27)
    3. Water widely beyond the well! Elisha gave all he could give to others.
    4. When God gives you an opportunity to serve, pour out all you’ve got!

CONNECTING THE DOTS TO ULTIMATE REALITIES…
* God in Christ is the source beneath every good well. (Jer. 2:13; Is. 12:3)
* Jesus’ living water is for drinking to our heart’s content. (John 4:10)
* Jesus’ living water is for sharing for the world’s need. (John 7:38)

Pray:

Missionary Lincy Tu: Pray for breakthrough and fulfillment of her church-planting project. Ask God to open doors, remove barriers, and provide resources, legal approvals, or community connections needed for this work.
