WORD: Footsteps to Finally
Steve Houston • 2 Samuel 5:1-12
Carrying out our calling and establishing our center are worthy journeys. Being wise and brave, we can live out our calling and live in our center.
- God’s Chosen People Finally Chose God’s Chosen King (5:1-4)
- The Nation Torn into 2 Factions – Saul’s Line vs. David the King Elect
- Deep Fractures: personal vendetta, spiritual divide, military pursuit
- Rising Tensions: a divided kingdom, civil war, blood feuds
- The Nation Unified as 1 Family – David was wise re his call (1 Sam. 16:13)
- David Convincing: genuine grief, just justice, personal patience
- People Convinced: shared identity, proven leadership, Samuel’s anointing
- Walk in the way of wisdom to live out your calling in this world! “So, deadlock-demolishers, instead of brute force, try wise finesse.”
- The Nation Torn into 2 Factions – Saul’s Line vs. David the King Elect
- God’s Chosen King Chose God’s Chosen Capital, Finally (5:5-12)
- A Trail and a Taunt of History – Salem = Jebus = Jerusalem
- Trail: Melchizedek, Joshua, and David were associated with this mount.
- Taunt: Joshua, the judges, and Saul failed to subjugate this stronghold.
- A Twist of History – David was brave re his capital (Dt. 12:5; Ps. 132:13)
- The Battle was over a location that was ideally suited for a capital.
- The Blessing grew when the ark was brought and the temple was built.
- Choose the course of courage to live in your center and settle in! “So, excuse-equipped, turn every urge to run into a reason to remain.”
- A Trail and a Taunt of History – Salem = Jebus = Jerusalem
The Father has made King Jesus the capital of his eternal kingdom. So let’s place Jesus at the center of our lives and of our worship.
