WORD: Turning the Page

Steve Houston • 1 Samuel 4–7

The decisive and even disruptive hand of God turns the page from one chapter to the next in the book of our lives.

  1. Samuel’s Life Chapter of Learning1 Samuel 4-6
    • Samuel Learned from Israel’s Definitive Defeat (4:1-11)
      • Samuel once more saw the rampant corruption in Eli’s family.
      • Eli’s sons brought the ark to the battlefield for good luck, but lost.
    • Samuel Learned from Eli’s Defining Death (4:12-18; Ps. 78:60)
      • Eli’s death fulfilled the prophesied collapse of his priestly line.
      • Eli’s death led to Shiloh’s demise and Samuel’s return to Ramah.
    • Losses around us can be definitive and defining for our good.
  2. Samuel’s Life Chapter of Leading1 Samuel 7
    • Samuel Led by Rallying Repentance in Israel (7:3-14)
      • The nation prayed at Mizpah, where God thundered and triumphed.
      • Samuel named a stone “Ebenezer” as a reminder and healer of history.
    • Samuel Led by his Stabilizing Service as a Judge (7:15-17)
      • Samuel had a four-town circuit for serving as the last judge of Israel.
      • Samuel came full circle and beyond when he settled in Ramah. (1:19)
    • People around us need to be rallied, and served for the long haul.
  • We learn from Jesus, “the Greater Samuel” – the one who underwent a defining death while delivering definitive defeat to death itself.
  • We are led by Jesus, “the Greater Samuel” – the one who rallied people to repentance and who provides a stabilizing service as our high priest.
