WORD: Something is Missing!
Steve Houston • Acts 19:1-17
Missing vital information about Jesus is deadly.
Missing a direct relationship with Jesus is dangerous.
- Twelve “Dinosaurs” Were Missing Information about Jesus (19:1-10)
- These folks got stuck on John’s provisional message. (:1-4)
- They were like Apollos in that they needed to be caught up to speed.
- They were unaware of the Holy Spirit and so unfamiliar with Jesus.
- These folks got caught up through Paul’s teaching ministry. (:5-7)
- After hearing about Jesus’ full work, they believed and were baptized.
- After believing in Jesus’ full work, they received the gift of the Spirit.
- These folks got stuck on John’s provisional message. (:1-4)
Saving information about Jesus
is…who Jesus is, what Jesus did, and what Jesus promised.
We too could have perilous gaps in our foundation that need filling in.
- Seven Exorcists Were Missing a Relationship with Jesus (19:11-17)
- These folks were attracted to Paul’s miracle-rich ministry. (:11-14)
- They had been a band of woo-woo brothers from a fishy background.
- They used the name of Jesus as an incantation to cast out a demon.
- These folks were “raw meat” to savage spiritual forces. (:15-16)
- The demon did not recognize their authority over the spiritual realm.
- The demon pounced on them, leaving them wounded and humiliated.
- These folks were attracted to Paul’s miracle-rich ministry. (:11-14)
A saving relationship with Jesus
starts with “repent & believe” and builds with “pray & obey”.
We too could have a shallow or even a shadow relationship with Jesus.
PRAY:
- South China
- Pray for local pastors and coworkers. Ask the Lord to grant them strength and wisdom under pressure, and for more students and young believers to respond to God’s call and commit to gospel ministry.
- Pray for the Lord to continue opening doors for the gospel in campuses and workplaces, and to guide next steps. Pray also for the September short-term exploratory trip and its preparations.
- Pray for the financial and family needs of long-term coworkers that they would receive abundant provision and comfort as they walk by faith.
- How can the English prayer team pray for you? Send requests.
