WORD: Truth Towers Tall!

Steve Houston • Acts 17:1-15

We can be secure in the truth! We can be captivated by the truth!

  1. Truth Weathers Spin: Lessons from ThessalonicaActs 17:1-9
    • Paul and Silas were actually peacemakers. (Eph. 6:15, Luke 10:6-7)
      • They had a gospel of peace and stayed with a man of peace.
      • They taught Christians to have (qualified) submission to authorities.
    • The Thessalonian Jews were the real troublemakers. (Rom. 3:17)
      • They recruited a mob to agitate a crowd with unfair charges of Paul.
      • They knew that Rome severely punished disorder and sedition.
    • Troublemakers stir the pot. Peacemakers smooth the waters. Take what society accuses Christians of with a grain of salt!
  2. Truth Welcomes Exploration: Lessons from BereaActs 17:10-15
    • Paul, trained by master-rabbi Gamaliel, was a rare Bible scholar.
      • Paul presented a water-tight, biblical case for Jesus’ Messiahship.
      • Paul presented only what his audience could absorb. (2 Cor. 1:13)
    • The Berean Jews demonstrated that they were rare Bible students.
      • Being the more noble Jews, they didn’t let emotion overrule reason.
      • They examined the words of Scripture to check out the word of Paul.
    • Bible scholars master their subject. Bible students love their subject. Treat what pastors teach with utmost curiosity and dig into the details.
